Rest in Peace Marco:

Today the weather in Italy is simply perfect: the sky is blue and the sun is shining. Unfortunately, not many people are enjoying it, because of a sad news that reached Italy this morning: Marco Simoncelli, one of the most talented Italian motorcyclists, passed away while racing the GP of Malaya. Marco was 24 and leaves his parents and his girlfriend Kate.
I'm not really keen on motorcycling, but I knew Simoncelli because Gazzetta used to dedicate a lot of articles to him. Moreover, he was easy to recognise because of his curly wild hair and he was pretty well known amongst students because last year he wrote a column for 'Smemoranda', one of the most popular Italian notebooks. From that column he came across as a very likeable, lively and down-to-Earth guy. He clearly loved his job and he died while doing what he liked the most.
Of course I think it's useless to say that Simoncelli's tragedy made my mind go back to that damned 9th of May, when Wouter Weylandt passed away on Passo Bocco. Even if Marco and Wouter had different stories and practised different sports, today I feel the same pain that hurt me 5 months ago.
I'm really lost for words and I cannot accept what has happened. Rest in peace Marco and may your family and your girlfriend have all the strength of the world in order to get over this hard moment.

  1. It's so strange how something like this or like Wouter's accident can affect you so much. After all, we never knew them but somehow it still hurts. Lots of hugs from me, dear!

  2. Marco's death was a real tragedy and, when a tragedy like that strikes a 24 year-old boy and his lovely family, I can't help but being shocked. Just like after Wouter's death, I found myself questioning religion, the meaning of life and all those serious things.

Marco was a very nice boy, very likeable, honest and down to Earth. Everyone here in Italy knew him and everyone was completely shocked by the news of his death. Motorbike is a popular sport in my country, and Simoncelli was pretty famous because of a commercial and because of his wild, curly, unmistakable hair.

Right now I feel very useless and, when I think about Marco's death, I almost feel as if I were in a nightmare. If I feel this way, I really cannot imagine how bad his relatives and his girlfriend must feel right now! Marco's parents seem such lovely and honest people and I still can't believe something so terrible has happened to them. And I really can't imagine how Marco's girlfriend must feel right now. She and Marco had been a couple for 5 years, they were going to move in their new house as soon as possible, and now everything is gone. The day before the funeral Paolo Simoncelli (Marco's father) said something like: 'My boy had chosen the right girlfriend, she's behaving like a true woman' and that made me cry like a baby. I just wish someone could turn back time and manage to avoid this tragedy. Unfortunately, it isn't possible. Hopefully, one day Someone will explain us the reason why those terrible things can happen.

In the meanwhile, I can just thank you for the much-needed hug and send all my strengths and my most sincere condolences to Marco's familiars. RIP Marco!
